Bissell SmartClean
As I write this post, I’m vacuuming my floors. No, I’m not that awesome at multi-tasking. I have a robot vacuum! I feel so lazy to have it, and yet so excited! I have a Bissell SmartClean and it’s so helpful! The SmartClean can vacuum my hard and carpeted floors while I accomplish other things around the house or even out and about!
Bissell SmartClean: Overall Review
Overall, I love the Bissell SmartClean. I’ve never had a robot vacuum, so I have no others to compare it to, but it runs easily, doesn’t fall down the stairs, and vacuums things up. My floors are cleaner than ever before! It makes my evening routine easy – pick up toys and big trash, start the robot vacuum, sit down with a snack and blog! My kids are messy, very messy, and I don’t have the time or energy to vacuum every night or even every week, so I LOVE that the Bissell SmartClean Robot Vacuum can do that for me, while I accomplish other things.
Bissell SmartClean: Setup
The Bissell SmartClean Robot Vacuum is really easy to setup! The vacuum piece only needs it’s two brushes easily snapped on and the battery inserted and it’s done! Then it wants to be charged for 6 hours, so plug it directly to the wall and let it be. The charging station uses the same wall plug, but it needs a lot of space if it’s going to dock itself, and we don’t have that kind of kid-free space, so I tend to plug it directly rather than use the dock.
The invisible wall is also slick – just put in batteries and set it somewhere. It projects an invisible barrier that the vacuum won’t cross. This means you can prevent it from entering a cluttered room, or getting too close to curtains or blankets, or going in to any other space you don’t want it to be.
Bissell SmartClean: Function
The Bissell SmartClean Robot Vacuum has lots of options for how it cleans, both in pattern and suction. It can set to high or low suction, which affects battery life and depends on the flooring you are working on. The patterns can be zigzag, circular, along the walls, criss-cross, or a random combination of all the patterns. The vacuum supposedly senses where the clutter is and focuses on those areas, which is awesome. At first I was worried it wouldn’t get everything because it seems so randomized. Then I just walked away and let it do it’s thing, and was pleasantly surprised that it did a great job.
The Bissell SmartClean Robot Vacuum’s long brushes run to scoot crumbs and everything towards the central suction brush unit to be sucked up. The central suction unit seems a little small to me, but it works well in combination with the long bristles. The long brushes also stick out a bit to help get along the walls. As far as walls go, it doesn’t do as well as a hand-held device meant for the walls, but it does better than my upright with no attachments. It gets little crumbs at the edge of the furniture and the walls. Plus it’s skinny enough to get under the bed, table, and other furniture so I don’t have to work so hard to sweep or move things to vacuum (correction, it vacuums those areas I would otherwise never vacuum).
The SmartClean Robot Vacuum can be set to run for time limits or to run until it’s battery dies. It can also be told to return to it’s base when it’s about dead, or to just stay wherever it happens to die.
The Bissell SmartClean Robot Vacuum doesn’t fall down the stairs. And it crosses the doorways and changes in flooring with no problem, including the flat rugs in our playroom and entryway. It does struggle a bit with woven rugs that easily bunch up, and if it gets angry and can’t find the direction to get free the vacuum will beep to let you know it’s lost or stuck then stop trying. Overall, it needs no supervision and I’m comfortable setting it to run while I’m far away or even while I’m out running errands.
Bissell SmartClean: Other Notes
The Bissell SmartClean Robot Vacuum is bagless, of course. The little collection bin is small, it has to be since the whole robot is small, but it holds a good amount and is super easy to remove, empty and replace. The little mesh needs to be rubbed clean sometimes, but that’s easy.
The Bissell SmartClean Robot Vacuum is clever. It has little “eyes” that see things in it’s way, so it’s not simply running in to things to turn around. It gets really close to hitting the object so it doesn’t leave a gap of dirty territory. We had a lot of balloons around the house and I quickly noticed that it would see the balloons and turn rather than hitting them.
The Bissell SmartClean has big, spring-loaded, rubber coated wheels to propel it along my carpet and over bumps with no problem. It has a little rotating front wheel to support it and move easily. The battery compartment is screw-free! Yay! It is a little hard to open, so I’m not worried about the kids getting into it. On that note, the battery life is satisfactory. The robot will run for about 50 minutes around the house if I simply set it free, which is nice because my house is huge and half carpet. It slows down and displays Lo when the battery is getting drained, and even then it roamed around for about another 10 minutes before giving up.
The Bissell Robot Vacuum base can be programmed to tell it to vacuum certain days at certain times. I haven’t explored this much since I don’t use the base and our schedule tends to be a bit different everyday, depending on my work schedule. I did program the time and day into it, and it seems quite simple in the instruction manual.
The kids love it. My 1 and 3 year old follow it around and watch it. They sit on the couch and stand on their little trampoline where they feel safe and watch it. Once in a while they get brave and grab it. And I’m not worried, because it can handle being handled. It stops when picked up off the ground, and then I can easily restart it. It’s great entertainment.
Bissell SmartClean: Cons
The biggest major downside I’ve noticed is that it’s noisy. Not as noisy as an upright vacuum, but I do have to turn up the volume on the tv if I expect to watch tv while the robot works.
The other con is my curtains. They hang to the floor and aren’t in great shape, so it’s really easy for the vacuum to get ahold of them. This isn’t such a problem with the suction, more a problem with the super-grippy wheels. Please note: you can’t force the wheels to move to release anything that’s stuck. They are run by little plastic gears that will break and then it won’t work anymore. So easily removing stuck curtains (or cords or blankets or whatever) out of the wheels safely can take a little time. And sometimes a little screwdriver to remove the wheel.
There isn’t an included remote. You can buy one online for $20 if you so desire, not a big deal.
Bissell SmartClean: Customer Service
That said, I did roll up the curtain once. I got it out, but then the left wheel wouldn’t turn, it kept erroring. So, Bissell sent me a return label, I packaged everything back up and sent it back, they called me to let me know it arrived and was still under warranty so would be replaced for free, and I had a new one within a week. No big questions or crazy forms to fill out. They were polite, pleasant, and efficient. Thank you Bissell and 1 year warranty!

gosh I really need one of these,my back has been bad lately and I cannot use the regular vaccum,it just hurts too badly
It’s a shame that they’re so noisy… I mean I understand because vacuums kind of have to be noisy if they’re going to actually suck up anything, but for some reason I always envisioned robot vacuums as being silent. I guess that just means you should let them run when you leave the house, if you can trust them not to destroy your house that is!
I frequently set it to run while I run errands, I just make sure anything cloth or wires are out of it’s reach so it won’t eat them. Even if it tries to suck something up, it’ll get stuck and give up before it causes any damage.
