These past few weeks while preparing and evaluating the items for the spring makeover (which by the way has been extended through May due to some delays in shipment – and the power of order of operations!) I’ve really been having a tough time making decisions about the objects and decorations in my home.
I’m SUPER indecisive.
Several items on the home makeover are for my bedroom. Pillows, comforter sets, sheeted, curtains, wall decor, etc.
What I’ve realized over the last few weeks (especially after receiving my {first} comforter set) is that my dark/espresso bedroom set does not go over so well with SO many of the newer, trendy colors!
I’ve always been more of a neutral decoration person but I really had my hopes set high on making my bedroom more wispy and romantic, but colorful as well.
A lot of the pictures of the rooms I was looking at had much lighter colored maple wardrobes or contemporary and metal bed frames so it was hard for me to get any inspiration.
I’m not great at envisioning things. I really have to SEE something before I know whether I like it or not!
I almost always see a picture of a room an copy it as much as I can when decorating rather than making my own decoration choices. So I had a tough time picking out home decor when none of the items I’ve been looking at are being displayed on nice espresso wood bedroom sets.
Notice the similarities?
The first photo is from HGTV Rate my Space – and then my photo (after the room had been lived in a bit). I even hunted down and purchased the exact crib set, and you can’t see it here – but I have a cursive phrase on the other corner wall.
This time I decided instead to try to be creative on my own:
So as I said: My first comforter set came. Which I thought would be great – except that it didn’t match my furniture!! So I exchanged it for a different one.
The best part of the whole process is when I emailed the photo of my current (dull) bedroom set to Sleepys and their designer/purchaser chose a set and gave me some tips on what needed updating to make the room look great (Like updating the fan to silver/bronze instead of gold).
Now that my room has slowly evolving – I’ve got a much more solid idea of what I want and need – and I’m really excited for it all to come together.
Is the last pic the comforter you chose? I want to redo my bedroom over with grey and yellow, but like you i have to have a room to copy I cant seem to come up with the ideas on my own.
I have so much trouble trying to decorate. I am trying to redecorate my living room and kitchen right now. It isn’t going very well. I think I need to set a goal of when I need to be finished. Thank you for the great post.

I never knew a designer/purchaser existed, yeah I’m a bit to simple for my own good sometimes. I luv your furniture I’ll be waiting to see what you come up with (besides I need some new things to comment on) lol I have a real hard time too. I put these burgundy curtains on my Christmas Wish List and In my head they matched great with the carpet and were offset by the furniture throws and wall decorations. When everything was up I cried then put the old ones back up. I’m glad you are taking time to check things out, return what you need to etc You need to be happy with your living space 🙂

Your room looks great. Mine still looks like a kids room and I’m 32, lol
It can be very hard to imagine what a room will look like when you are redecorating. I try to bing pictures with me when I am shopping for new items. It makes it easier because you can see the colors and don’t have to guess if items match. Good luck on your room. 🙂
I am an awful decorator. I just can’t see the big picture. My daughter has a great eye so I take her along when I need to pick new curtains or bedding.
It looks really great, my bedroom could use an overhaul too.

I am definitely not a decorator and ran into the same problem some years back with having the dark furniture in the bedroom. You did a great job!
