So we’ve had quite the road over the last year with potty training my almost 3 1/2 year old, Andrew.
A little less than a year ago we started the whole process of ‘training.’
I received this really awesome potty training kit from Baby Signs. Andrew was too old for most of the ‘signing’ part of it (because he already spoke those words) but he just LOVES the video. The package comes with a train whistle, a book, a DVD, Stickers, and a parents book.
We started introducing the whole concept of potty training with this. It seemed that he didn’t mind going to the bathroom – he just wouldn’t remember to NOT go to the bathroom when he was wearing his underwear.
So we chose to potty train ‘naked’ as the book suggested.
For MONTHS and Months he walked around the house with no bottoms on at all, embarrassing himself and us as people would come over to visit – but he never had an accident on the ground when he was naked! So that was great
Finally over the last several months I’ve decided to take the ‘plunge’ and just get him trained with pants and underwear on.
The problem for us wasn’t so much that he didn’t know that he had to go – because he TOTALLY knew. It was more that his STUPID underwear were SO hard to get on and off, that he’d just rather pee himself than deal with taking them on and off.
Why on earth they make awesome character underwear for little boys and it has the stupid THICK strap that is impossible for them to pull up and down is BEYOND me.
He had such a hard time with those!
My mom was constantly telling me about the fabric pants that ‘should be at Walmart’ that are easier for little boys… but we looked and looked at Walmart and never found them. I just assumed it was a thing of the past.
UNTIL…. I saw them.
Target, MOM!! Target! Not Walmart – ha!
They’re Gerber Training Pants!
They are soft and have a very light top where they aren’t hard to pull up over his butt – and even a little extra fabric in the crotch area for extra absorption!
Genius.
I bought 2 packs of them right away to give them a try – and I was HOOKED! I bought a few more packages later (because we were going through 2-3 of them a day at first…) but they are a God-Send!
Andrew is able to go to the bathroom and get them up over his butt again, so the majority of the time he doesn’t leave the bathroom with no pants on..
So potty training has gone really well for us since these Gerber potty training underwear came into the picture – and that is NO joke.
When Gerber approached me for their towels – I told them that I’d much rather talk to all of you about the underwear – because I was planning on it anyway So they let me do a review and – yes- even a giveaway of these awesome pants!
You can purchase these Training pants online at GerberChildrenswear.com or like I found them – at Target – for around $8.99 ea. Gerber’s Facebook page also periodically has coupons – so check them out before you get to the store!
The Baby Signs Potty Training Kit can be purchased online at BabySigns.com for $39.95.

Okay so I just broke a rule not to post on a giveaway but I have commented on all of the nongiveaway posts, twice so I have to post here. LOL I do know what you mean about the stupid waistband. It was so hard training my son. We live in the country and I don’t know if you know anything about country boys but they love going out side. So it was a little game with him. They also have to see who can go the farthest. Only boys! LOL It did help to remember you have to pull them down first to get the results. LOL

We are just starting to think about training my 2 yr old daughter. We got a potty but so far the only thing it’s been used for is to hold her snacks. LOL! I’ve decided to just take it easy and not pressure her into anything she’s not ready for but still getting prepared for when she does decide to start using the potty!
Tamara says
i’m totally with you. My son finally “got it” when he went totally naked. My daughter, on the other hand, is a bit freaked out by the whole thing. Maybe putting undies on her would do the trick. I also really like the Gerber trainers.
Carrie Phelps says
Each child is so different with potty training. I childcare for a two year old girl that took me one week to FULLY potty train. On the other hand my three year old grandson has been potty training for a full year now. I wish I knew what would work with him.
Amanda N. says
Oh boy. We’re not there yet. I’m waiting for him to really show interest so that I’m not trying to force it and beating my head against the wall while he fights potty training. He’d shown interest right before he turned 2 and we went with it at the time, but then he did a complete turn around and started refusing to even talk about the potty. So we’ve started stocking up on training pants that I like, he’s got some step stools, a potty seat for the big potty, and a little potty. I’m pregnant right now, so I’m kind of hoping he’ll hold off on the interest until after the baby’s here so I don’t have to deal with any regression in response to the new baby joining the family…but we shall see!
Blue racer says
My son is just starting the training process. He doesn’t want to wear a diaper, yet will only sit on the potty if I leave him naked for awhile and he decides he wants to.
Patti Williams says
My oldest who is now 4 refused to use the potty chair. He would scream if he went near it. We out the seat on the big potty and he was broke in 2 months. Its almost time for the next one so we shall see how this one goes. I used Gerber training pants with the first one and will again.
Dandi D says
Haven’t got there yet. It should be interesting.
Keri B. says
My daughter learned to use the toilet fairly easily, but didn’t like to go #2. A sticker chart was the solution that worked in just a couple weeks. No more accidents. We are just starting with our son and we’ll see how it goes… Would love some Gerber pants to help transition out of the diapers!!
Krista R says
I haven’t started potty-training my son yet, but the time is coming soon so I’ve been listening to others’ advice. The most recent advice I heard was from a mom who has already trained two kids. She said not to stress about the process, making it negative for the child. Every kid learns differently and in their own time.
Heather Kelly says
I am not entering the giveaway – But yes, those darn waistbands suck! For girls, they make them thin. I am even using our son’s Gerber training pants for our daughter now! They never go bad! Great post!

We are just getting started potty training our little guy. We are counting on the summer so he can wear less clothes and have the potty chair outside. Wish us luck!
Beth R says
With our oldest, we just waited until he was ready. He has just turned 3 and potty trained himself. The first day I reminded him and on the second he told me no mommy I don’t need your help. After that he had maybe a handful of accidents and that was when we were outside. It has been so easy! Plus he was night time potty trained in a month after that. I think we got lucky. We will see how his brother does
Denise C says
I’m just about to start potty training with my son…I didn’t even realize the boy’s underpants were so much thicker! I didn’t have too much trouble with my daughter once we went with the naked bottom idea…but yes, the waistband on her panties was very thin. Now I know what to look for when we go undie shopping for my son!
Richard Morris says
We are in the early stages and he likes to use the potty but isn’t consistent with it yet…

I have experienced it several times, keeping them dry seems to help alot. And taking them often.
Jacquelyn Cannon says
My grandson just started the training process. He feels that he’s too big to wear Pampers anymore, but he likes keeping up with his cousin. He doesn’t want to wear a diaper, but will only sit on the potty if I leave him naked for awhile and he decides to date who he wants to.
Janet W. says
My grandson hasn’t started yet… maybe in the next few months because he’s 2 1/2. I’m nervous about the process since I had two daughters and never have worked with a boy for potty training. I hope it goes smoothly!
bonnye sensenig says
We aren’t there yet- but I feel like I have read so much advice I am over-thinking things….im nervous.
Katy (lovekatydid) says
We have a strong willed little boy, if he doesn’t want to do something its nearly impossible to persuade him. So we waited until he was ready to potty train, a week before his 3rd birthday he decided it was time. He picked out his own potty at the store about a month before so we were ready. It took him a week to potty train! I was so surprised! We used the gerber training pants because they were soft, and he could pull them up himself. 🙂
Tatum says
I think you can’t be stressed about potty training. Mine was a breeze
Rachel says
not quite there yet, she understands after she goes, but not before
Jessica says
We aren’t ready for potty training yet. We will wait till my daughter shows interest in going on the potty.
Stephanie Grant says
With my son I used an egg timer and set it to go off every 30 min at first and kind of made a game out of going to potty. He quickly learnt that when the timer went off it was time to go potty and after he got good at holding it until the timer went off at 30min we gradually went up 15 min each time until he no longer needed the timer to tell him when to go and we had him potty trained when he was abt 2yrs old.
tami p says

C. Pay says
We’re trying to potty train but it’s been really rough. I hope real training pants will help because so far my kid can’t really distinguish between the disposable trainers and diapers! Stickers were working for awhile but not now. Nobody told me potty training would be so hard!!

We’re working on it………….not any progress yet, but she does like to show off her big girl panties if she has them on
Brandi Elam says
My daughter trained easily, with no reward system or any enticement. My son, on the other hand, took forever. He finally trained at 3 1/2 so that he’d be able to move up to the “big kid class” at school. I had tried everything with him and in the end, being treated like a baby by being with smaller children was what worked for him! I’m hoping my youngest son (15 months) will train a little more quickly when it’s time.
Tabathia B says

We have been working on potty training for a couple months now, it seems to have a lot of ups and downs. Some days she goes to the potty all day and some days she won’t go at all, but I am just following her lead.
Angela says
we have our daughter fully potty trained and i dont know how we got so lucky! she did it all on her own and never had night accidents! our son is a different story! so the challenge has begun! he loves sitting on the potty but never goes!
Jan Messali says
Haven’t gotten there yet, but am looking forward to not having to change diapers.
Laura Jacobson says
We are just going to be starting, so I dont have any helpful hints….but I am going to read all of these for some to help us along! I have heard boys train a bit later….he just turned 2…..but he does have his potty chair so we are starting to get him used to sitting on it!
Ashley C says

I succeeded with my first, now I am trying with my second. MY first was actually pretty easy. She seemed to like sitting on her potty and she loved the princess pull ons. However, she could have cared less if she was wet or not. I had a fear that she would still be in diapers at age 5! So after going through a small fortune on pull ons, I tried another method…put her in regular underwear and follow her around one weekend, making her at least sit on the potty once an hour. Well, she had one peeing accident and has been dry ever since. I think she was just ready and really needed to know what it felt like to be wet. I am not sure what to do with my second child. She at least tells me when she is wet, but does not like to sit on the potty.
