We recently moved across the country and our tablet was an absolute life saver to keep Micah occupied for long hours in the car. When we got to Minnesota we opened up our newest LeapFrog box which included a LeapFrog Epic and Micah’s “green pad” is his new favorite. The LeapFrog Epic is an Android-based tablet with access to the LeapFrog store and Amazon app store, which (best of all) comes totally kid-safe and ready to play out of the box (after a super-simple parent account and WiFi setup).
The Epic is kid-perfect. Like the other LeapFrog tablets, the apps and tablet have the ability to grow with your child. And each child gets a separate profile. Which means the apps gradually get more difficult as the child succeeds at tasks. Thankfully, the games also have a way to “reset” the difficulty so if it gets too hard too fast for my little man, I can reset it, game by game. The Epic also has a playful home screen with interactive “stickers” to put on the home screen world, see the weather, check the time, and check out your awards. It’s a little hard for my almost-3-year-old, but I’m really excited to see it grow with him over the coming years.
The Epic is also kid-proof. It has a tough screen, comes with a green bumper, and the stylus (with it’s connection in the center again, score for left-handers!) is tough enough to withstand my baby that chews on EVERYTHING! It’s supposed to be incredibly resistant to drops and accidents, we haven’t tested this but I haven’t heard of anyone having any trouble yet! The charge lasts a long time and fits a typical android phone charger for easy charging. Plus a headphone jack, a Micro SD slot and a volume control.
The LeapFrog Epic is parent-friendly. As a parent, I have control of EVERYTHING. I can buy and download free and paid apps from LeapFrog and Amazon, control which apps are open to which users, set time limits on playtime, and control web access. Plus I have full web access in the parent area, while the kids just have access to pre-loaded and parent-added websites and videos. Micah hasn’t fully discovered the youtube-type quality of the video app, but he’ll love it. He currently adores the coloring app, pet party, and the one pre-loaded Lemonade-making LeapFrog episode that teaches numbers and math without ever letting on that it’s more than simply fun.
I also love that the LeapFrog Epic has 6 favorite icons that are changeable on the home screen. It comes pre-set, but it’s easy to switch out icons for games that Micah loves so he doesn’t have to get into the whole app menu to find his favorite. Plus the weather and light on the homescreen changes based on the weather in the area you set it to! We’ve had trouble getting the weather app to find our town, but it’s in the right area so it snows and Micah gets mad at it because the poor kid only thinks he’s in Minnesota if he’s at grandma’s house!
The LeapFrog Epic actually has a really simple set-up, so it’s easy to get started. It’s simply setting up the WiFi, parent account (just log in if you already have an account) and a parent PIN number. Tell it your kid’s names and ages, pick a free app, and let everything load. Takes a few minutes, but not as long as I thought it might. Then you can either set pictures and settings for each kids account, or just hand it over and rest assured that everything that is pre-loaded is totally kid-safe and they can’t “accidently” buy things without knowing your parent code. the Amazon market has to be downloaded separately in the parent menu and then setup with either your already-existing Amazon log-in or a new one.
We adore our LeapFrog Epic and haven’t had a single problem yet. I know Micah will continue to love the Epic as he gets older as fully expect it to be a great learning and fun tablet until he’s at least a teenager! The only thing the Epic doesn’t have that I would love to see is access to the Google Play store. There are some fun educational games for free there that cost money in the Amazon market. I’ve suggested this to LeapFrog and they are constantly looking for ways to improve themselves, so hopefully they’ll look into adding this with a future update!

Have you had any issues with the volume being really low from apps that have been downloaded from Amazon?
Correction: It is the SD card slot that is hidden, not the MicroUSB socket.
