Don’t Let the List of Baby Needs Scare You
Having a baby is full of emotional swings, hormonal influxes, and concerns about your ability to parent. Throw in a long list of baby essentials and many new parents start to panic. It can be intensely overwhelming trying to obtain everything in time and be able to afford it. While most everyone will have a baby shower, you cannot depend on that party to get everything you need. Today we look at what you will need, what you can be flexible about obtaining, and how to get it all.
Bedding
Every baby needs a bed. Even if you are choosing to co-sleep, the baby will eventually move on to their own bed. When it comes to bedding, here is a quick run-down on needs.
- Convertible crib or co-sleeping bassinet
- Premium baby mattress
- 2 or 3 crib sheets
- Mobile (wait on this or put it on your baby registry)
- Mattress protector
- Baby blanket (do not use until they can roll over! Make one or put it on your registry)
Since this is one of the most important and expensive needs, we suggest saving up and obtaining this first. If a family member offers to get you one, make sure they get it to you about 3-4 months before you are due so that it can be put together and ensure its safety. Considering a used option? Ultimately, we advise against it. If you have a relative that had a baby that is moving into a toddler bed and know that it is sturdy and has all the necessary parts, okay. Avoid buying anything at a yard sale or off of Craigslist because it has a high chance of not being safe.

Feeding
Your baby is going to be hungry and you must be ready. Think ahead about whether you’ll breastfeed, bottle feed, or a combination. Here are a few things you will need to prepare for the baby coming home.
- Breast pump
- Bottles and nipples
- Baby bottle warmer (this can wait until Mom goes back to work if she chooses or add it to the baby registry)
- Baby bowls and utensils (baby registry or wait until the baby is ready for rice cereal and food)
- 10-14 baby bibs (perfect baby registry item or make them yourself)
- High chair (you can also wait or put this on the registry)
Bathing and Diapering
Babies love to get messy and your little one will be no exception. Diapers and bathing options will be extremely important. Here is a great list of items to help you prepare.
- Diapers (buy a pack of newborns, put the rest on your registry)
- Diaper holder (a good registry item. DO NOT open disposable diapers to fill before the baby is born, diapers do go bad)
- Baby wipes
- Baby wipes warmer (a luxury item so add that to your registry)
- Diaper pail (you can make your own or add to your registry)
- Diaper rash cream (Boudreaux’s Butt Paste is extremely popular!)
- Baby bathtub (you can wait until the baby is bigger or add to your registry)
- 6-10 baby washcloths (someone can knit/crochet these or put these on your registry)
- Gentle baby wash (great registry item!)
- Bath toys (wait until they are older and you can find these at yard sales just about anywhere)
Clothing
Buying baby clothes requires a delicate skill to keep plenty of clothes on hands for messy days and yet not so much that they don’t ever wear everything. These are a perfect registry item and we suggest registering for bigger clothing so that family can buy your needs for later. Here is what we suggest you have ready for when the baby comes home.
- Going home outfit (new parents should get to pick this one out)
- 7 onesie outfits in 0-3 mo
- 5-7 pair of socks
- 2 hats (sun hats for summer babies, warm ones for winter babies)
- One lightweight baby blanket (handmade or from the registry)
It doesn’t sound like much but your baby will grow fast and that is why your registry should include plenty of bigger sizes!
Other things you should add to your registry, or pick up when they are on sale, are car seats, stroller, thermometers, baby nail clippers, pacifiers, and fever medications. Anything you won’t use right away you can save up for and buy when they go on sale, or hope someone brings one to the baby shower.
