Must-Haves for Baby’s First Week
I’ve written about what you need for pregnancy, and for the hospital, and what baby really needs off that HUGE registry list, but what do you need when you get home from the hospital, those first few hectic days with little sleep and lots of new things going on?!?
Baby’s First Week Needs:
Swaddles or Blankets
Babies need to feel secure. They just came out of a warm, cozy womb after all. The world is big, cold and scary, so swaddles or being wrapped in blankets snugly will help them be cozy and feel safe. Which will help you both sleep better! No blankets lose in the crib or in a way that risks going over baby’s face.
Diapers and Wipes
Babies poop and pee a lot. It’s brown and sticky and then yellow and gross before it ever gets to looking like remotely normal diarrhea. So, whether you go cloth or disposable, diapers and wipes are a huge must.
Butt cream and burp cloths
Baby butts get red, even if you change poops immediately, so butt cream is important.
Plus, babies spit up. Lots. Some more than others, but all spit up lots. And it gets everywhere, so be ready to wipe it up, change your shirt multiple times, and wonder if baby kept enough down. Don’t worry, as long as the spit up isn’t projecting across the room, she’s ok.
A Place to Sleep
Crib, bassinet, sleeper, whatever. Baby needs a place to sleep. Without going into the drama of opinions about pros and cons of co-sleeping, it is dangerous and increases the risk of SIDS. Bedside bassinets are awesome to keep baby close but safe, especially the first few weeks and months while baby develops sleep and nursing schedules.
A Car Seat
Baby needs to be safe in the car. Period.
Small Things the Hospital Will Probably Give You:
Baby shampoo for those first baths. A bulb syringe for sucking out the boogers.
And small things they won’t give you:
Mitts so baby doesn’t scratch herself and baby nail clippers. A soft, thin washcloth. And now you can start picking among all those outfits and bibs and cute things you got at the baby showers!
You
Baby needs love, security, family. He doesn’t have any clue if you are playing with a 25 cent garage sale stuffed animal or a $50 toy, what he does know is your voice, your voice, your heartbeat. Cuddle, love, play, talk, and breath. Skin-to-skin time is huge in helping baby get used to the world. You are the most important for the first week, and the years to come.
Those swaddling blankets is what my grandsons used when they were newborns. I wish they were around when my daughters were born 30+ years ago! They are so soft and breathable!
It is really overwhelming for new mommies, so it always helps to have a place to go to read on things they need. I love those swaddling blankets. I think having a registry is a great idea, because some people see them and realize what they will have a lot to buy but they can prepare and let people know what they still need.
