DIY Kids Construction Playset
My mom introduced me to a fantastic cheap toy for preschoolers: beans! Dry beans that is. Combined with his construction vehicles, they are dirt and rocks. Combined with a play house, they are food at a restaurant. With blocks, it’s a fun piling game. Or haul them around in trucks and trailers. Our beans find their way into just about every other toy in the house.
My husband took the fun one step farther and colored the beans! Simple put them in baggies, add in some food coloring, and mix. After they are well covered, leave the baggies open an hour or so, then pour onto paper towels to dry. We let them dry overnight but that’s not necessary.
The result is brightly colored beans to play with! Our kids quite quickly mixed the natural and blue beans together and I’m not going to make the effort to separate them. It makes a fun appearance for their construction land on our homemade playtable!
If you color your beans and they get wet, the color may leach off a bit. We haven’t had any trouble with the color staining anything else.
