Be Active!
Video games are a huge draw to both kids and adults, and they can help kids with problem solving and sometimes teamwork, but most don’t encourage activity or imagination. So, limit the video games and encourage kids to get up and be activity, not just for 30 minutes, but for the majority of their day! Micah loves playing games on my phone, but I limit him (sometimes selfishly because I want my phone, but also because I want him to run and play!).
Eat Healthy
Stock healthy snacks. When Peter was growing up they had a container of veggies in the fridge that the boys could snack from. Micah loves greens (beans, broccoli, even brussel sprouts!) and I love when he snacks on peppers and other veggies.
Drink Healthy
Drink lots and try to stick with water and low calorie drinks. Juice and Gatorade hydrate but are also packed with calories and sugar that kids don’t need. Micah loves apple juice and would go straight for it every time, but he doesn’t need the extra sugar and added ingredients. So, we’ve been pushing water a lot more, we mix in 0 calorie juice flavorings because he won’t drink much plain water.
Aquaball is a ZERO calorie kids drink that tastes delicious and has no extra sugar. Just water, all natural flavors, vitamins and using a bit of stevia to sweeten, instead of any sugar or juice. I think it tastes a lot like Gatorade, and Micah thinks it’s delicious. There are 5 different flavors and 5 different designs on the bottles (including Frozen!).
Encourage Imagination!
Bored kids leads to snacking and tv watching. Keep a stocked craft closet for rainy days, or days they just don’t feel like being outside. Check Pinterest for a never-ending source of ideas! Crafts can even be super cheap and simple, like transforming empty Aquaballs into fun works of art!
Be an Example
Your kids will imitate you. If you are living a healthy lifestyle, they are much more likely to do the same. If you are sitting on the couch munching chips when you tell them to go be active outside, good luck. Better than anything, play and live WITH your kids. Play together, craft together, cook together, eat together and talk together.

This is a wonderful post, Andrea! Crafting was my favorite activity as a child, we had way too many tissue paper flowers that my mom HAD to put into vases around the house. She’s now stocked me with my own craft closet necessities – glue gun, modge podge, popsicle sticks – I still break out a project on a rainy day, although now I look to Pinterest to try & create some ‘fanicer’ home decor 😉

My kids love healthy foods like salad and fruit. We try to do a fruit and veggie at every meal and encourage healthy eating by introducing healthy foods early and often.
