Homemade Baby Food
You think your baby is ready to start eating, so you took a walk down the baby food aisle, panicked at the prices, and ran away to cry in the candy aisle.
Ok, hopefully it wasn’t that bad, but so many moms feel like they are stuck between high prices for store-bought, preservative-full baby food (or even higher prices for organic baby food) versus hard work for homemade baby food. The reality is that you can make your own baby food quickly, easily and for WAY less than store bought.
Make Baby Food at Home the Easy Way!
It doesn’t take fancy tools, previous experience, or preservatives to make great, healthy baby food. Baby food is thin and basic, most of the work can be done quickly and easily. You can do it with just a few tools:
A coffee grinder or food processor – something to grind dry ingredients to a powder or large ingredients to a mush. Not necessary for all recipes and often just a potato masher or even a fork are good enough.
Ice cube trays – to freeze the food for future use. Use normal cube-shapes, they are easier to get out of the tray than odd shapes.
A bowl and a spoon – to mix in!
Baggies and a scissors – optional, but they make it a lot easier to squeeze the food into the ice cube trays. The baggies are also to store the ice cubes after they are frozen.
How to Make Homemade Baby Food
1) Buy the foods, whether canned, frozen or fresh (healthiest).
2) Make the recipe (see below for a bunch of great recipes, I’ll try to post a new one when I can!)
3) Either a) spoon the mixture into a baggie, cut off the corner and squeeze into the ice cube tray cubbies or b) glob it into the ice cube tray and spread it even with the top of each cubby with your spoon.
4) Freeze!
5) Label baggies with the food and date and fill with frozen cubes until you are ready to use them!
Want to use it within the week?
Easy, do steps 1 and 2, then put it in small, sealed containers and throw it in the fridge. Dry ingredients also simply go in a sealed container for later use.
How Much will Baby Eat?
All babies are different, but an average amount is about 2 ice cubes, or about a half cup.
The cubes are easy to thaw on the counter, in a baggie in a bowl of warm water, or in the microwave (be careful to mix well and test the temperature if you nuke it). Or put them in the diaper bag for use in a few hours at dad’s softball game. Grab a bunch to throw in the freezer at grandma’s on vacation. And mix and match cubes for new and fun taste combinations! The cubes are just as easy and portable as a pouch or jar, without the risk of breaking a glass jar or buying a moldy pouch!

We made our own baby food. I am always amazed that people think it is hard. We didn’t have anything fancy, just what you said above and it is so easy. We would spend an hour once a week making a bunch up and it was ready to go
