At first, I thought this would be a lot like MineCraft for kids and, in a way, it is. DoodleCraft is an island where kids can build, plant tree, interact with and help the people of the world, and simply be creative.
Unlike MineCraft, the kids don’t have to forage for supplies, instead they gain more abilities, colors, blueprints, patterns, and space as they get further in the game. There are plots of land to build on which you walk up to and build a building, house, tree, or something else. This brings up the blueprint screen where the layout of the walls and roof already exist and you get to color, paint, shoot it with paintballs (so fun! Even makes a fun sound!), change the pattern (think bricks or plain, etc), and put on stickers. Then it builds itself, after which you can go in and edit or tear the whole thing down. You can also go around problem-solving for the residents of the area, like recycling and cleaning trash or finding someone a flower for his art project.
Fun and Educational
I love DoodleCraft because it’s a simple and fun way for kids to deign and control their own world while learning about colors, patterns, shapes, spatial reasoning, sorting, and problem solving for themselves and others. As the child goes on, the game can become more complex and difficult so it doesn’t easily become boring. Micah is a bit young for it yet, but I enjoyed playing around with it, he enjoys playing together with my help, and I know he’ll enjoy it more once he is old enough to better understand it. (He’s not quite 3 now and it’s rated for ages 4-7).
