Oregon is one of the most beautiful states in the U.S.A. With beautiful Pacific coastlines, epic mountains, and dense forests, it’s no surprise you’re thinking about taking a road trip through Oregon. While the state is big enough that you won’t make it to every spot on this list, these five must-see stops are the very best that Oregon has to offer.
For forests: Willamette National Forest
Oregon is full of national forests and parks, but one of the most beautiful and interesting areas in Central Oregon is Willamette National Forest. An hour or so’s drive from Eugene or Bend, Willamette National Forest has so many spots you’ll want to visit you could spend your whole trip there. There’s the pampered luxury of Cougar Hot Springs, the stunning blue water of Tamolitch Falls, and the scenic Opal Creek, along with plenty more waterfalls, hot springs, and trails to explore. If you’re planning on taking your car up a mountain or into a creek, be sure to get car insurance in Oregon that keeps you fully covered.
For coastal views: Ecola State Park
This 9-mile stretch of coastline offers some of the most jaw-dropping views in Oregon. Ecola State Park curves around Tillamook Head in northwest Oregon. This state park has secluded coves blanketed in mist, long sweeping shorelines, and picnic spots dotted with spruce trees and lighthouses. Plus, you’ll be a stone’s throw away from Cannon Beach, one of Oregon’s most idyllic coastal towns.
For wildlife: Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area
Along Oregon’s Highway 38, you can stop off in the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area to see wild elk at any time of year. It’s a convenient spot on a road trip and provides some of the best views of Oregon’s native Roosevelt elk. The elk keep their distance, so bring binoculars and a good camera if you want to get photos. And while you’re there, see how many different types of birds you can spot? This area is full of beautiful wildlife, making it the perfect stop for nature-loving road trippers.
For water sports: Hood River
Further inland from Portland is the laid-back town, of Hood River. Situated on the Columbia River, Hood River, also known as the windsurfing capital of the world, is the ideal spot if you want to enjoy the range of water sports available around the Columbia River. Kitesurfing, windsurfing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and whitewater rafting are just some of the water sports you can enjoy in Hood River. Plus, the town itself is full of breweries, wineries, and restaurants and the surrounding forests are great for mountain biking and hiking.
For culture: Portland
It’s tough to put together a road trip guide to Oregon without mentioning Portland. With its food trucks, coffee shops, microbreweries, markets, and gardens, there really is a never-ending list of things to do in Portland. Portland might be the exciting stop to kick off your trip or your final destination. Either way, be sure to fill up on all that great food and drink, check out the city’s stunning gardens, and enjoy the world-famous hipster vibe of America’s coolest city.
