Potty Training Tips
Potty Training can be incredibly stressful, or super easy, depending on your child. Some kids are potty-ready and pretty much train themselves, others take more time and effort. My little man just turned 3 and has been day-time accident-free for about 2 months, woohoo! But it was a long road. So here are some potty training tips from me to you, mom to mom.
Don’t Stress – Laugh a Little
Potty training can be stressful. It can feel like it’s never going to work out. Just breath. Your little one will eventually be potty trained. Every child is different, so your child is not going to train the same way, at the same age, or in the same time frame as his siblings, or your best friend’s kid, or that co-worker’s baby. I found myself getting stressed out at the multiple accidents, pee on the carpet, poop on the driveway. The neighbor lady helped me; she called him her “little streaker” since he ran around bottom-less for so long, and helped me laugh at the comical little man running around with a wipe trying to clean up his poop on the pavement all by himself.
Setbacks Happen
You might think you are close to fully potty trained, then all of a sudden there are 3 pee spots on the floor, 2 chunks of poop in the sandbox, or a puddle on the Walmart floor. Potty training is a learning process and little ones are so distractible! They will have off days and tired days. They will have moments of playing so hard that the pee surprises them. Let them know that next time they need to tell you and head to the potty, but try not to shame them. Laugh it off, have the kiddo help you clean up before going back to playing, and remember every moment is new.
Use a Potty Seat
Big adult toilets can be scary for those little bums, so while you want to encourage your kiddo is seeing the big potty in a positive (non-scary) light, a potty seat can be a huge help. My little man loves his potty seat because it’s his size. So, while he’s capable of using a big potty and does so in public, he chooses his little potty over the big potty at home every time. Make sure you get one with a remove-able inner bucket, like the Nuby Potty Seat, for easy dumping and cleaning.
We love our Nuby potty seat because it’s basic, easy to dump and clean, and so lightweight. Potty seats are also incredibly portable! We actually have two; one in our playroom and one in Micah’s room. This way he can just make a short dash to the potty while playing rather than scurrying through the whole house to get to the bathroom on time. And the potty in his room is to encourage him to potty at night when his door is closed and the house is dark.
Avoid Life Changes
If you can, avoid big changes to your family life while potty training, or avoid potty training when you know big events are just around the corner. While we were potty training we went on vacation to Minnesota, had a huge garage sale, sold our house, and moved to Minnesota where we lived with grandma for a few weeks before getting our own place. Each event was accompanied by increased daytime accidents and setbacks in training. As much as I wanted Micah to be successfully potty trained, I wasn’t going to happen while our lives were stressful, the routine was out of whack, and life felt generally unsettled. Within a week of settling into our new home and getting back into a regular routine he was accident free and I was one happy mama.
Drink Lots
You know if you drink more you pee more. So do your little ones. So, especially the first few days of potty training, push the liquids! Fill that sippy cup constantly, offer whatever liquids they like, and feed him salty foods to make him thirstier. This means more peeing, which means more opportunities to try to hit the potty!
Party On
When the pee (or poop) goes in the potty, through a party! Even if it was a near miss or a fight to get there, it’s an event worth celebrating. Sing a song, give a prize, keep a sticker chart, do a little dance, give high 5s, or more. Whatever your child enjoys and feels like is a reward, do it. Make potty success feel like a celebration, like he did something awesome, so he’ll have that motivation to do it again. This also makes potty-time feel more positive and decreases fear of the toilet or of peeing.
Take Some Time
Life is busy and it’s easy to think if he would just learn already! Potty training takes time and energy. Set aside a few days that you can be home with them without a huge to do list. This will give you time to be right there to encourage use of the potty, catch accidents as they begin instead of later on, and celebrate successes. Use this time to go on short trips, this will help teach them to pee before leaving the house and to communicate with you when they need to go and aren’t in a familiar location. Put the to-do list aside and enjoy some mommy and me time.
