When I was choosing a school for my oldest, I knew that any regular school just wouldn’t do. I wanted him to be engaged and motivated. As far back as I can remember Andrew has been intrigued with how things work together. It reminds me of my husband, whose mother always told me the stories about how he would randomly take things apart and put them back together (or try!).
We have loved that our local school district has its own STEM (actually STEAM, with art added in) program. STEM is a great approach for children who love to learn hands-on approaches to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics: using your mind to think through possibilities instead of limitations of a problem.
There are other great programs out there that focus on young scientists as well. The Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge is the nation’s premier science competition for grades 5-8. Through the program, young inventors have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work closely with a 3M Scientist Mentor, compete for $25,000, and earn the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.”
The mission of the Young Scientist Challenge is to foster a new generation of American scientists at an age when interest in science generally declines. In 2008, Discovery Education teamed up with 3M, one of the world’s most notable innovators – to cultivate the next generation of problem solvers and give students an opportunity to receive mentorship from 3M scientists.
While we haven’t been able to get accepted to the STEM program in our area due to bad-luck in the lottery, I’m always looking for ways to help my mini-engineer who loves math to get thinking in a science way. I want to foster that love of science, technology, engineering and math. This year for Easter instead of getting tons of candy we got the boys some cool toys that will expand their science minds vs. harming them with EVIL cavity causing SUGAR!!! (Can you tell I’m a Dental Hygienist?)
While he’s not QUITE old enough yet, he’s really excited about eventually entering the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. If your grade 5-8 child loves science, encourage them to submit their idea to the Young Scientist Challenge. It will be fun!

I did that as a kid as well,and this was way before computers were invented,,i used to take apart radios,tvs etc that were broke and fix them
Most of the jobs in the future will be in the STEM field. The biggest growth will likely be in designing and repairing the automated machines that will replace the workers in fast food restaurants.
