Baby food can be INCREDIBLY easy to make. Even in large quantities and short periods of time. This past week, in 2 separate 20-30 minute sessions, I made enough baby food to last the next 2 months. With fruits and veggies frozen in cubes, I’m ready to pull out food quickly and easily and don’t have to worry about making more anytime soon.
The secret to incredibly easy baby food?
Canned and frozen fruits and veggies.
Buying fruits and veggies canned or frozen is not as healthy as fresh. But it’s close enough and takes out the majority of the prep work that some fruits and veggies have.
Making baby food from frozen vegetables is so simple: Just heat it until the veggies are tender then pour into a food processor and add liquid to the desired consistency (normally about 6 ounces of liquid, I use breast milk for the added nutrition and digestibility). Use the liquid that settles at the bottom of the heated vegetables too, this holds some of the nutrients that come out of the veggies during the heating process.
Making baby from canned is even easier! Dump the cans in the food processor and done! Don’t use all the liquid from the cans right away though, pour out the liquid and add it gradually or the baby food will likely be too thin (you can add oatmeal or rice cereal and heat to thicken it if you do get it too thin).
Spread your resulting baby food into ice cube trays, freeze, then bag them up for later use. Enjoy!
Tip: Some veggies from frozen are more fibrous than others. Veggies like broccoli, carrots and spinach are more fibrous and need to microwave or steam longer to get softer to then process down smoother.
You can mix and match fruits and veggies to make different combinations, or add spices to each to make basic starter foods more exciting.
My starter foods: peas, carrots, broccoli, green beans, peaches, pears, nectarines, and a mix of chickpeas and spinach. I think spinach does better from fresh, and spinach contains nitrates* so it’s better to wait until after 8 months old to eat much of it. *Nitrates are naturally occurring in the soil and can be found in spinach, beets, cabbage, broccoli, carrots. After 6 months old, baby’s stomach has the acids to deal with the low levels of nitrates in these, so it’s no problem. Spinach, though, if improperly stored can actually increase it’s nitrate levels, so it’s better to be safe and wait a few extra months for baby’s digestive system to be fully prepared.
