But if professional pictures are out of your budget, don’t freak out, just grab some household items and take your own!
You know what makes your kids happy, what time of day is best for them, and what half-smiles precede the heart-melting grins. You already have the cute outfits, bows and shoes, so get your kids and yourselves dressed and gather:
A Backdrop – aka a blanket. Or tablecloth. Or the Christmas tree. Or the cute or comfy chair. There are lots of options for taking pictures and if there is a stain or blemish, don’t worry, you can edit it out pretty easily with a number of different free editing programs on your computer.
A camera – the nicer camera the better, but if all you have is your phone, set it on the highest, best setting possible so that you can edit pictures without the pictures becoming blurry.
A toy – or whatever will make your kid laugh. Babies love rattles, a rattle will make baby look toward the sound and smile. Work on your funny faces or weird impressions to make a toddler smile, or have candy at the ready if bribing is high on your list of possibilities. Whatever you want in the picture – a favorite toy, Christmas ornaments, a black or white board to write age or other messages on, or anything else!
Another person – if you want to take a whole family picture, it’s a lot easier to have someone else take the picture than set it up on a tripod and smile at the right moment. With this great digital age, you can instruct the other person to take lots and LOTS of pictures, then sort through them afterwards to pick the best ones and then edit and straighten to your heart’s desire. We’ve utilized our youth, extended family, and whoever happens to be standing nearby.
Set up your backdrop and items, move your people into place and try your best! Babies don’t always smile on command and toddlers don’t always follow instructions, so be patient, make lots of funny faces and weird noises, and try to have fun. Take lots of pictures with lots of positions and angles so if you can’t get the right shot in one, maybe you got it in another.
Not happy? Try taking it natural – go to a park or sit down and play a game while snapping pictures. Sometimes the best pictures happen when you are just hanging out and relaxing!
