You’ve probably seen in the movies, parents reading bedtime stories to their children before they fall asleep. That’s not a pastime, that’s still a real thing! Not many parents have the energy to read to their kids when they come home from work and just want to go to bed, themselves. But, we’re here to tell you why reading to your kids is so important and you should be making as much time as you possibly can, to do so. Children can also begin to fall in love with writing and expressive communication. You never know, you might be the parent of the next millionaire novelist!
Reading bolsters imagination
The reason why young lion cubs fight with each other is that they want to have fun. But, little do they know that play-fighting means their bodies get stronger, and their brain gets used to fighting so when it’s time to do so for real, they are ready. Essentially, they’re sharpening their instincts. Human beings are problem-solvers. We need to do the same type of things, as in sharpening our skills when we’re young, regarding logical thinking. For that, we need to be creative and consider issues from several angles in order to fix an issue.
Reading books with your children will allow you to bolster his or her imagination, which they will then use in later life, to solve problems in their careers or personal lives. As you can see, imagination and reading, go hand in hand, because the stories will have unique characters and landscapes that will be anything other than real life.
You stop them falling behind
Every parent is worried about their child’s education, but so many parents are naive in this regard. They think that school is where their children get educated and that they don’t have to play a role. Just dropping your kids off to school and picking them up again. You should be reading to your kids so they can develop their vocabulary. They not only become better speakers, but they become better writers. If you feel that your child is having an issue with his or her vocabulary and is falling behind for their age, then speak with speech pathology experts.
They have incredible training in helping children develop their speaking skills and put the correct descriptive words in the right place. They will also teach your children how to be more expressive and solve expressive language disorders. Once your child becomes more familiar with certain words, their meaning and used to the timing of when to use them, as well as putting words in the right place regarding grammar, then they will be more comfortable reading books and talking about them.
Reading helps their emotional development
We live vicariously through characters in books. The stories that we read have a profound effect on our personality and our childhood. Harry Potter is by far the best example because so many kids from all around the world say that the character of Harry and his friends have shades of their own personality. They display courage, bravery, friendship, loyalty and humility, among other qualities. Don’t we as parents, want our children to have these types of traits? Reading is a window which we can climb through, to reach those spaces in our mind and heart, to become those qualities.
They can become writers
If you read interviews of authors and novelists, they’ll mostly say that their passion for writing occurred when their parents bought them a book or took them to the library. This isn’t a coincidence! Children are very impressionable, and they need someone to guide them through their early life. They want to try new things but as parents, we are their gateway to new experiences. Reading books with your children will allow them to become enthused and want to write their own stories.
Where can this lead? Anywhere they want it to! They can become writers of books, perhaps they become writers of modern culture, commentators on politics or whatever industry they want to work in when they’re older. You should also buy your kids, pencils, books and other stationery, so they can write their own short story books. In fact, alternative days. One day you read books together. The next day, they continue writing a story.
Reading can lead to so many wonderful things. You and your children will bond and explore different worlds. Your child’s imagination will be stupefied and you may light a flame within them, that burns for the rest of their lives.
