When people think about adventuring in the US, the western states of Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona immediately come to mind. But it turns out that the northern state of Wisconsin is also something of an adventure superstar, thanks to its flowing wilderness and numerous attractions.
Tour Door County
If you thought that Cape Cod was impressive with its numerous lighthouses, then think again. Door County is a region of Wisconsin full of pretty towns that congregate around the shores of Lake Michigan. The area is home to thriving folk communities who haven’t forgotten the old way of life in the area and still celebrate it to this day. In Door County, you feel as if you are in the midwest of old, not in some inauthentic tourist recreation.
Climb High Above Devils Lake
Devils Lake is one of the most popular adventure destinations in the state. The lake has one of the most interesting geographies you’ll find anywhere in the state park. The lake itself is bowl-shaped and surrounded by densely forested hills. Devils Lake climbing is a popular attraction, with hundreds of enthusiasts making their way to the location every year.
The sheer scale of Devils Lake will impress you, as will the views of the countryside beyond. It is well worth a visit if you happen to be in the area.
Travel The Great River Road
If you’re planning a road trip to the glorious state of Wisconsin, then make sure that you include the state’s Great River Road in your route.
The Great River Road is a 250-mile ribbon of tarmac that runs along the state’s western border. All along the road, you’ll find enormous, 500-foot cliffs covered in beautiful woodland that look great in the fall. Along the way, you’ll come across a host of riverside towns selling local produce, such as catfish, alongside antiques and local delicacies.
See The Apostle Islands
Just a few miles offshore of Lake Superior, you’ll find the Apostle Islands, an archipelago that stretches out far into the expanse of water. Here you’ll find all kinds of adventure activities, from exploring sea caves to going kayaking.
Most of the year, Lake Superior – the world’s largest body of freshwater – is relatively calm, making it ideal for watersports. In the fall and during the winter, however, it can get choppy, just like a regular saltwater sea. Thus, if you are new to kayaking or windsurfing, save your adventures for the calmer summer months.
Visit The Cave Of The Mounds
While the Cave of Mounds might be one of the most famous attractions in Wisconsin today, it was actually discovered by accident on a farm in 1939. Before then, nobody knew it was there.
The Cave of the Mounds is still a family-owned cave and a National Natural Landmark. It gives visitors the chance to get up close and personal with delicate crystal formations and rock structures, all lit up with mysterious lights. While it isn’t a hardcore caving expedition, it is a great way to see a vast range of geologic time, right in front of your eyes.
